This is a game that I started working on just before PAX, that I’m picking back up. I’d like to pitch this game to a company like Button Shy. But if they don’t go for it, I’ll probably publish it myself.
So far, Graphic Design is my Passion is an 18-card party game where one person plays the role of a client with a unique communication style and everyone else plays the role of designers who have to design a logo for this client. Logos that the client needs will be a mash up of two simple words that they’re not allowed to say. Words combinations like “Dog Arrow” or “Wall Leaf” can come from these lists.

You might’ve noticed that the client persona is less of an improv-style thing and more of a communication quirk.
Designers then use shapes on the backs of the cards to put toegether their design, with a rotating market of shapes in the middle for them to grab from. Play is simultaneious and designers can grab a new card whenever they like.

When a designer is ready, they raise their hand and must ask a question to receive feedback from the client.
I was able to playtest this a couple of times already and the early feedback was positive! The rules were a bit easier, where players only had to choose one word. The idea there was for me to test out how challenging it was for a client to be able to communicate what they needed. Here’s some of what players were hoping for:
- More abstract shapes (shapes had more difinitive patterns in the last iteration)
- Shapes towards the edge (the prior iteration’s shapes had space and some where in the middle of the card back)
- More difficult logos to design (in the prior iteration, you just had to choose one word, now I’m going to test it out with two words combined to make one wacky logo)
I’ve got a new build of the game with this feedback incorporated. I’m hoping to test out soon, we’ll see how it goes! *fingers crossed*
