One of my pieces was accepted, which ultimately hurts my goal of getting fifty rejections. I’m quite frustrated that my streak of rejections has been broken by a publication’s willingness to publish one of my stories. (Please, publication in question that I will not name, if you’re reading this, it’s a joke! Please publish my story, I love you; no, wait, that’s weird; I don’t love you. Now I sound cruel. Okay, I appreciate you and the work your doing and thank you for publishing my story.)
I’ll make a bigger deal of this once it’s out and I can brag about it here in my blog and on social media. There are many places to boast and cry for attention in the modern age!
One of my stories was rejected from a dream publication, but I realized that I accidentally submitted this story to that place not too long ago. I want to try them with a different story. I also speculate that they rarely take longer stories, probably being more scrutinizing over stories that clock in over 7500 words or so. This is a lesson I’ve learned: Just because a publication says they’ll take 11-14k word stories, doesn’t mean they’re likely to do so. I believe the middle ground of short stories is most attractive to publishers: around 3-5.5k, sometimes up to 7.5k. That’s not to say they’ll never take a longer story, but they’re less likely to.
I still have a lot of work to do, more stories to edit and get ready for fall/winter submissions. I have some stories that are ready to submit, I simply need to go through the motions.
I’ve got to work double, no, triple time to meet my goal of fifty rejections this year.
